migrate from sbs 2003 to server 2008 r2

Below are steps I did in my Lab to move directly to

windows 2003 or 2008 server with

exchange 2007:

Active Directory Part

– Extend the AD schema on all DC’s, or only the

SBS2003, using the ‘ad prep’ utility

included with windows 2008

– Join the Windows 2008 or windows 2003 server to

the domain as a regular member

server

– Upgrade the Windows 2008 or 2003 server to a

Domain Controller using the ‘dcpromo’ if

upgraded to windows 2008 then make sure the forest

and domain functional level stays

as windows 2003.

– Install or configure DNS & DHCP on newly installed

domain controller. Configure DNS and

wins so that it gets a copy of the existing DNS from

the source domain controller (SBS2003

server)

– Transfer all the FSMO roles from the old SBS2003 to

the Windows 2008 server or

windows 2003 server

– When FSMO roles are transferred either migrate all

information immediately as you have

7 days or install license extension patch to allow

extension to 21 days at

aylang=en

– Move Group Policies etc

– Make the new installed server a Global Catalogue

server so that users can access and

login to Ad with not problems.

– Install any additional CAL licenses or Volume

Licenses purchased for the Windows 2008

server. This will allow all users to log in appropriately

to all servers with no restrictions.

Exchange 2007 or 2010 Part:

– Install a new member server with 64 bit OS

– Install all updates and configure as a member server

– Extend the Schema to support Exchange 2007 or 2010

– Install Exchange 2007 or 2010 using legacy support

switch and as a second exchange

server on the same organization

– Use exchange 2007 or exchange 2010 migration

tools to move mailboxes from old server

(sbs) to the new exchange server

– Follow KB articles from Microsoft to move Public

Folders if they exist and offline address

book from old server to the new server

– Follow KB articles from Microsoft to decommission

SBS 2003 server from environment

after end of replication 3 to 4 days MAX.
